Well, the tighter the drag, the harder for the fish to pull out line, the looser the drag, the easier for line to be pulled out. Hope I helped.

You don't really mean the drag adjustment . You are referring to the tension adjustment that allows you to cast different weights of lures without back lashing. To adjust this you need to tie on a lure you will be using and hod the rod out and level with the ground. Hit the thumbar and and the lure should slowly fall to the ground and the spool should not create an over run of line when the lure hits the ground. If it falls too fast an over run will be created . You need to tighten the tension until it is adjusted correctly. If i doesn't fall at all you need to loosen it up just slightly. And you are correct. If the spool tension is too tight it will not cast far at all.If it is too loose it will back lash every cast.

it doesnt effect the casting but it just makes the line easier to pull out...and it is all up to you how tight the drag is but i like mine to be looser just so that the fish can run and i can real them back in but many people dont like playing fish off the drag and just want to real them in and get it over with so there is usually really tight

the drag shouldn't have anything to do with casting. The drag system is designed for fighting fish, it allows line to be pulled out. Tighten it and it takes more pressure to pull the line, loosen it and it takes less pressure to pull the line out.

Is this a solid cylinder or hollow cylinder?
For solid, I=m*r^2/2.
If hollow, I=m*r^2

I will assume it is solid. If not, simply recalculate with the different moment of inertia.

2.3*0.040=0.94*0.040^2*α/2
solve for α

2*2.3*/(0.94*0.040)=α
122 rad/s^2

the angular displacement in 0.35 seconds is
.5*122*0.35^2 rad
7.47 rad
the anmount of line pulled is
7.47*2*π*0.040
1.88 m

ancient egyptians fished. ancient chinese did also. probably even earlier. they had more "modern" tackle like silk lines and gut leaders and bamboo rods. they did the first split cane rods although, reels were unheard of as in egypt.
the first modern revolving spool multiplying reel is credited to gottfried spuhl in germany in 1701. he was a watchmaker and silversmith as well as an ardent angler. yes, he did name the spool after himself.
the earlier european and english rods (poles) were made of laminated yew and lemonwood. lines were of horse hair. still tied on the end.

Izaak Walton would probably be one of the first properly documented people who fished as a hobby and for enjoyment. His main thing was observing fish and their aquatic environment. That led him to start fly fishing, and develop various fishing lures that we now know as flies.

Been beatin' them waters for over 50 years and your question is not only one that is interestin' but, somethin' I never really gave thought to!? Found some information regardin' the reel that ya' might find helpful? As for one doin' well without one ~ the ol Cane Pole with a' bobber is an alternative and is still used by many to this day. Know that it's not much but, ya' might want to read through link I've givin' ya';)... < ' ( (( > <

You need to research Sir issac Walton, he's English going back a few hundred years. He covered alot of disciplines in the sport way before most.http://www.flyfishinghistory.com/walton.htm
